YAMS JAM March, 2013

We had a big jam back in March, which pulled together many of the veteran players from the Macon area. There was about 4 hours of music played that night - this is a nice little snapshot of the evening!

It took awhile to get the video edited together [we were pulling together audio from one gizmo, and video from two dinky digital cameras].

The video is over at
or you can watch it below.

RIP Jerry Mullins - we miss you, old friend!

Bajo Sexto @ YAMS!

This is a lousy picture of an absolutely gorgeous Bajo Sexto we have in stock at Young America Music School.

Come on in to the store on Zebulon Road and take a listen - then check out the fabulous YAMS "Beat the Internet Guys" pricing"!

According to http://www.reyesaccordions.com/Macias.htm:
The history of the Bajo Sexto is not exactly clear, but by some historian's account, the instrument was first brought to Mexico by the Spaniards. Others say it evolved from the 12-string guitar, emerging sometime late in the 19th century as native to the bajio region of Jalisco, Mexico.
In the early development of conjunto music, the Bajo was used mainly as a bass instrument in conjunction with the bass chord elements of the accordion. But later, with the addition of bass and drums in modern conjunto groups, the Bajo players were free to expand on its primary use as a rhythm instrument and played as a solo, melody-line instrument. The first to do so was Santiago Almeida who played with the pioneer accordionist Narcisco Martinez in the early 1900s.

The Steel -stringed Bajo is tuned an octave below a standard guitar, and the last two strings are tuned up a half-step: E, A, D, G, C, F, low to high, with each course tuned in octaves. This gives it a rich tone and a loud, resonant quality.

Mackie c300Z passive loudspeaker - tuned by EAW!

Over at YAMS' Mackieville we have the c300Z passive loudspeaker - a very handy thing to come by and pick up if you are ready to upgrade your PA system, but have decent power amps already! This baby was tuned by the uber-famous EAW loudspeaker company, so you KNOW they sound terrific!

Come on by the store and take a look and a listen! You know they have the famous YAMS "Beat the Internet Guys" pricing!

The C300z 2-Way Portable Passive Loudspeakers put the superior clarity, wide dispersion, and legendary ergonomics of the SRM Series within reach of any serious musician, DJ, or small club. These compact-yet-loud speakers can be pole-mounted for use as a small full-range PA system, combined with subwoofers as needed, and even employed as high-quality passive floor monitors.
PRECISION TUNED BY THE SPEAKER BRAINS AT EAW
The new C Series passive Loudspeakers represent Mackie's first lightweight passive speakers tuned exclusively by the EAW loudspeaker engineering team. We're talking about the same team with more than 25 years of high-output loudspeaker expertise, having created loudspeaker systems for critical applications as diverse as the Super Bowl, Iron Maiden, and the Pope. And although loudspeakers for these mega-systems cost exponentially more than the stalwart C300z, many of the same concepts applied, namely: designing custom 12" LF drivers with a frequency range from 50 Hz - 3000 Hz and a 3" voice coil that can take a pounding. And a 1.75" High-Frequency titanium Driver and Horn providing a wide, controlled dispersion pattern and precise reproduction of the critical 1000 Hz - 20,000 Hz upper mid-range and high frequencies.

Mackie PPM608 portable powered mixer WITH effects!

Now, THIS is a seriously handy mixer for the small band! Seriously, which would YOU rather haul around?

Most powered mixers out there have either a limited set of mixing tools—keeping your mix decidedly average—or they cram in a mind-boggling amount of lame effects that you would never use. Every professional carries the right tools for the job, so the PPM608 comes with a great-sounding, highly useable toolkit:

  • Premium Mackie preamplifiers ensure transparent, low-noise/high-headroom characteristics right at the front of the mixer. The PPM608 offers 8 mic/line channels with trusted Mackie preamplifiers.
  • True 48V phantom power allows every condenser mic to perform at its full potential.
  • Legendary 3-band active EQ straight off the tremendously popular VLZ3 mixer series. Sweetening any channel is a breeze.
  • Individual channel inserts (ch. 1-6) allow compressors and other outboard processing on critical instrument or voice channels. Don’t leave the lead singer hanging!
  • Dedicated in-line compressors on channels 1-4 bring simple but sweet dynamics to our PPM mixers.
  • Dual graphic EQs are provided for use with mains and monitors. These EQs feature tight, constant-Q Filters that effect only the frequency range you’ve intended, unlike many inexpensive built-in graphic EQs that will remain nameless.
  • Simple stuff like useable main and monitor output metering make a huge difference in your mix.  Sorry, but 5 LED meters at the output doesn’t tell you that you’re about to clip. Our high-resolution 12-segment meters enable more visibility of your signal, and the super quick response of the meters allows what you see to translate quickly and easily to what you hear.
The builtin effects unit - which indeed sounds SWEET!

Remember, YAMS specializes in "Beat the Internet Guys" pricing - so you really do need to swing by teh store and take a look!
